OPINION (Express) – The Philippines is on high alert for a major earthquake as the country states it is preparing for ‘The Big One’. The Philippines sits atop the dreaded Ring of Fire and with a population of 108 million, a major quake could be devastating for the southeast Asian nation. The Ring of Fire is the largest and most active fault line in the world, stretching from New Zealand, all around the east coast of Asia, over to Canada

and the USA and all the way down to the southern tip of South America and causes more than 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes. The plates which make up the Ring of Fire are so huge even the slightest shift results in massive tremors, volcano activity and tsunamis. Experts know that the Ring of Fire has to potential to unleash some catastrophic quakes and officials in the Philippines are now recognizing that threat. Recently the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has urged the public to take part in a preparation drill, as it admits ‘the Big One’ is coming. READ MORE
