A strong 6.1 earthquake has hit Western Iran, near the border with Iraq.  USGS reports the epicenter is 31 km (19 miles) west of the city of Javanrud. Reports confirm the shake was also felt in Kurdistan. Local media said a number of people have been injured and were rushed to hospital in Javanrud.

Unconfirmed reports claimed at least one person has died and around 20 people have been injured. Last year a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck in the province of Jermansheh, near the border with Iraq. It killed at least 530 people and injured thousands. It was recorded as Iran’s deadliest earthquake in more than a decade. READ MORE
