I teach the Constitution for a living. I revere the document when it is used to further social justice and make our country a more inclusive one. I admire the Founders for establishing a representative democracy that has survived for over two centuries. But sometimes we just have to acknowledge that the Founders and the Constitution are wrong. This is one of those times. We need to say loud and clear: The Second Amendment must be repealed.
As much as we have a culture of reverence for the founding generation, it’s important to understand that they got it wrong — and got it wrong often. Unfortunately, in many instances, they enshrined those faults in the Constitution. For instance, most people don’t know it now, but under the original document, Mitt Romney would be serving as President Obama’s vice president right now because he was the runner-up in the last presidential election. FULL REPORT
Cohen makes some valid arguments, however he fails to state exactly why the second amendment was put in the constitution. It was not put there for the benefit of hunters and gun collectors. The founders realized that an unarmed population was literally at the mercy of a government which could turn tyrannical at any moment on them. Consider it an insurance policy. It has been proven in history time after time with the most current example ( and what the anti=gun lobby is sick of hearing about), the nazi Germany era and Hitler. “The TRUTH shall set you free” Of course the founders were flawed, we all are. They drew up a document the best way they could, considering the time. None had a crystal ball to see what the future would bring. There is a price to pay for living in a free society, otherwise, be ready to surrender your vehicles, liquor(again),cigarettes, and a multitude of other things that can kill. Sorry. Trying not to focus on the people behind all these things. Cars do not kill for example. Perhaps the drunk driver behind the wheel does? Parting thought. FYI Mr. Cohen, the NRA is not composed of gun manufacturers , rednecks and the like, but of millions of LAW ABIDING, RESPONSIBLE gun
owners .There are over 80.000.000 lawful gun owners in this country. Whatever America, or government you profess to, good luck, because that type of government won’t succeed at disarmament.
