The existence of UFOs and extraterrestrials is hotly debated online. After the United States government released a tranche of files that are purported to contain information on alien life, craft, and alleged sightings over a broad number of years, an increased interest in UFOs and the recirculation of videos has ramped up.

Two videos – both from the year 2019 – were recently reshared that appear to show alien crafts in the sky. One clip was filmed over the American state of North Carolina. Another meanwhile, was shot over Havana, Cuba, and was even featured on American television.

While America may seem like the epicenter of alleged alien activity – one state, for example, has had over 2,00 sightings – the United Kingdom has had its fair share of extraterrestrial intrigue and controversies. The new Netflix series, Encounters, details how one Welsh village was the scene of a huge spate of alleged alien sightings in the 1970s.

Before the 70s, though, there were supposed extraterrestrial experiences among Royal Air Force Pilots, and – according to released files from the British government – Prime Minister Winston Churchill decreed that these allegations should be quashed in order to prevent “mass hysteria.” The rationale behind Churchill’s decision, it appears, was to maintain public morale during World War 2.

According to the declassified files – which were published by the National Archives in 2010 – Churchill met with US General Dwight Eisenhower, who later became US President, at an undisclosed location in the United States and made the demands.

The allegations surrounding Churchill were made by the grandson of one of his bodyguards. The bodyguard of the former British British Prime Minister – who was an RAF pilot – made the alleged UFO sighting during the course of his flying career. The pilot is alleged to have witnessed an alien craft off the English east coast during World War 2.

After his grandfather told him of the sighting and cover-up attempts, the grandson wrote to the Ministry of Defence in 1999 to ask for more information. Concerned about its potential to cause panic and hysteria, Churchill ordered that the sighting be kept secret for 50 years.

“The interesting thing is that most of the UFO files from that period have been destroyed,” said Nick Pope, a former employee of the Ministry of Defence whose job was to investigate UFO sightings and experiences.

“But what happened is that a scientist whose grandfather was one of his [Churchill’s] bodyguards, said look, Churchill and Eisenhower got together to cover up this phenomenal UFO sighting, that was witnessed by an RAF crew on their way back from a bombing raid. The reason apparently was because Churchill believed it would cause mass panic and it would shatter people’s religious views.”
