(ETH) – On Friday, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources wrote on Facebook that it had received reports of birds with “eye swelling and crusty discharge, as well as neurological signs.”

Now, Kentucky officials are encouraging people to report observations of sick or dead birds that may be experiencing an unidentified illness. In late May, the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources began receiving reports of sick and dying birds with symptoms of eye swelling and crusty discharge, as well as signs of neurological problems.

As of June 17, 2021, unexplained bird deaths have been recorded in several Kentucky counties. The birds include Blue Jays, Common Grackles, and European starlings, though other species may be affected, the department said. Kentucky Fish & Wildlife and other state wildlife agencies are working with diagnostic laboratories to investigate the cause(s) of mortality.  READ MORE
