(ETH) – While everyone is paying close attention to the deadly coronavirus that is spreading around the globe, many are overlooking the ramifications of the seasonal influenza virus that according to reports has hit children hard this year and officials are now warning of a second wave of influenza that is spreading nationwide.
In Pennsylvania alone, it is being reported that they have more than 72,000 confirmed cases of the flu. Officials are concerned because the flu can be very dangerous for children that have a weakened immune system or have not been vaccinated. School systems are where the virus can spread quickly. Dr. Aditi Joshi, with Jefferson Health, stated:
“Because it’s very contagious, it can live on surfaces for a few hours even if you’re not there and if you don’t wash your hands, it tends to be very contagious for that reason, so kids tend to get it a lot,” Dr. Joshi said. The CDC is indicating that this year is one of the worst flu seasons for children. Ninety-two have died since last fall, which is the highest total at this point in the season in the past decade. MORE
