(ETH) – What is being described as a “mysterious mechanical groaning” noise has startled many residents recently in Anchorage, Alaska. According to local reports, the mysterious sounds began around 5 a.m. Monday, which was described as a loud sound that moved through parts of Anchorage. The sound reportedly, came in bursts, getting louder, then evaporating and was heard from Midtown to West Anchorage, from Spenard to the Old Seward Highway. Some locals claim they heard it once, while others repeatedly for hours but witnesses miles apart reported the tone abruptly waking them up.

One resident who heard the sound as she was getting ready for work near Lake Spenard said: “It’s almost like a foghorn, and screeching metal on metal,”  Another resident named Melissa Thompson said: “Every time I tell somebody about it, I say it sounds like a submarine scraping the bottom of a pool or something,” Melissa reportedly went outside to record the sound as it was happening.  “I would say it sounded like underwater moaning,” said Stephanie Quinn-Davidson, who lives near Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and has heard the sound multiple times over the years.
