(KWCH) Parents, students and educators asked the Wichita School Board to modify its non-discrimination policy to include protections for sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. GLSEN, an organization that advocates for LGBTQ students in the Wichita school district, helped orchestrate the push for change. It comes a month after the death of Vayden “Bucky” Easley who died by suicide at Wichita Southeast High School. The district’s current policy says it “does not

discriminate on the basis of race, color, ancestry, national origin, religion, sex, disability, age, veteran status, or any other legally protected classification.” About ten people spoke in support of updating the policy, but not everyone agreed. “For a school or any adult to be okay with that.and continue doing it,” said Sarah Lopez, an LGBTQ advocate. “They shouldn’t be working with kids because statistically, there are many children at that school that are gay or questioning it.” READ MORE
