(METRO) – Beachgoers were stunned when they saw wave after wave of dead sharks being washed onto the sand. A video shows a beach strewn with around 100 shark bodies, some of which had decomposed in the water. Some fear they may have had their fins removed before being tossed back into the sea, while others think net fishing killed them. The woman who took the video said she lost count of the number of sharks washing ashore when she visited the beach at Burry Port in west Wales. She said: ‘I dread to think how

many were still floating in the sea. I’m sure what we saw was a small percentage of what was thrown back. ‘There was not one mark on them – no hook so likely a net by-catch – but because it’s not the species being hunted they die and get thrown back.’ A spokesman for the Marine Conservation Society (MSC) said the fish appeared to be smooth-hounds, also known as dogfish, which are common in British waters. They are often caught up in trawler nets and the dumped back into the sea. READ MORE
