A wildfire in southern New Jersey’s Wharton State Forest has consumed over 4,000 acres, triggering evacuations and road closures.

The fire, which started Monday night in Camden and Burlington counties, remains 0% contained as of Wednesday morning, with dry conditions and strong winds fueling its spread.

According to NBC, over 1,000 homes and businesses have been evacuated, with residents in Tabernacle Township and surrounding areas urged to leave. No injuries or property damage have been reported, but the fire’s intensity has raised concerns.

Firefighters, supported by aerial water drops, are battling the blaze, but challenging weather—low humidity and gusts up to 25 mph—has hindered progress.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service identified a fireworks display as the likely cause, though investigations continue.

Air quality alerts are in effect across the region, with smoke impacting Philadelphia and New York. Governor Phil Murphy urged residents to avoid starting fires and comply with evacuation orders.
