The Palisades Fire, which is the largest of six active wildfires in the Los Angeles region, shifted east on Friday night, prompting a new evacuation order that affects much of the Brentwood neighborhood and parts of Encino.

This new flare-up has been described as a “significant development” by L.A. County spokesman Jesus Ruiz, who noted that the fire is rapidly growing and moving toward “a heavily populated area,” raising considerable concern.

So far, the fires have resulted in at least 11 fatalities and scorched more than 37,000 acres—an area larger than San Francisco—according to Cal Fire. The flames have destroyed over 12,000 structures and displaced tens of thousands of residents.

The Palisades Fire currently encompasses more than 21,000 acres, making it the largest fire, while the Eaton Fire has burned over 14,000 acres. These two fires are currently 8% and 3% contained, respectively.
