Costco has issued a warning after eggs were recalled in five states nationwide over a potential salmonella contamination.

On November 27, Handsome Brook Farms issued a recall notice for 10,800 units of Organic pasture-raised 24-count Eggs sold under the Kirkland Signature brand name.

The eggs were sold at 25 Costco stores across Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee beginning on November 22, 2024.

The recall was initiated after the company found that eggs not intended for distribution were packaged and distributed in retail packaging by mistake.

Shauna Grob, head of operations and finance at Handsome Brook Farms, told Newsweek: ‘No illnesses have been reported at all. We have received a number of consumer calls to confirm whether the units they had in their possession were recallable, but that has been the only interactions we have had with consumers thus far since releasing press release and notice to Costco consumers.’

Salmonella can cause serious or sometimes fatal infections in frail or elderly people, young children, or those with compromised immune systems.

Healthy persons infected with salmonella may often experience fever, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare instances, salmonella infections can lead to more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

Salmonella is the most common cause of food poisoning in the US.

According to the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service, eating contaminated food can trigger an infection known as salmonellosis, which can strike six hours to six days after consumption.

The affected Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs have the UPC number 9661910680 and are packaged in plastic egg cartons labeled with Kirkland Signature on the top.

The recall only applies to products with the Julian code 327 and a use-by date of January 5, 2025, which can be found printed on the side of the plastic egg carton.

No other products are impacted by this recall. In order to prevent the incident from happening again, the company has implemented additional supply chain controls and retraining.

There have been no illness complaints to date. This recall is being conducted in cooperation with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Impacted consumers should stop consuming the product.

They should dispose of the products, or return the identified units to their local Costco store for a full refund.
