A teenage Walmart employee has been found dead in a walk-in bakery oven, police have said.
Detectives responded to calls of a ‘sudden death’ at a store in Halifax, Nova Scotia, around 9.30pm on Saturday, and found a deceased woman.
Halifax Police said the 19-year-old was ‘located in a large walk-in oven belonging to the store’s bakery department.’
The force added it it was too early to say what the cause of death was. Multiple sources told Global News said it is believed that the worker was trapped in the walk-in oven and later died.
Walmart Canada has not commented on the oven or details around the death at the store on Mumford Road.
‘We are heartbroken and our deepest thoughts are with our associate and their family,’ Walmart spokesperson Amanda Moss told CBC News.
‘We extend our sincerest condolences to those who were closest to them.’
Halifax Regional Police Constable Martin Cromwell called the investigation ‘complex’.
‘We just want to encourage the public to be patient with our investigation and be mindful that there is family members and co-workers involved,’ he said on Monday afternoon.
Police would not say if they suspected criminal activity.
The store was closed on Sunday and Monday.
While the woman’s identity has not been released, Maritime Sikh Society Satnam Singh Randhawa said she was a member of that religious community.
