South Korea ramp up tensions with the North as ballistic missile is tested in front of new president

South Korea has ramped up tensions with North Korea with a test-launch of a ballistic missile. President Moon Jae-in watched over the launch as tensions in the region increase following reports of a new round of missile testing. An engagement with the North would only be possible when the South has the security ability to overwhelm them, the presidential office quoted Moon as he visited the state-run Agency for Defence Development.

“I believe in dialogue, but dialogue is possible when it’s backed by strong defense and engagement policy is possible only when we have security ability that can overwhelm the North,” Moon was quoted saying at the test site. It came hours after U.S. officials said North Korea has carried out a test of a rocket engine that they believe could be for an intercontinental ballistic missile. READ MORE
