A deadly heat wave has struck New York City leaving more than 4,000 power outages in New York City and Westchester County. On Utica Avenue in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, a melted power line next to a gas station came down collapsed and without warning as a result of the extreme heat. “I was opening the car door to take something out of the car and the wire just fell,” said Christina Morrison of East Flatbush. “It just dropped — just like that.” In Washington, DC and an excessive heat warning was issued as temperatures reached 99 degrees tying a record that has only taken place there twice in recorded history in 1926 and 1900.

An excessive heat warning was issued for Saturday by the National Weather Service, meaning that temperatures are expected to be “dangerously high.” A modest amount of relief may be in sight, but it’s still a few days away. By Thursday, Washington’s high temperature could be “near 89,” the Weather Service said.
