Michael Tait, the renowned frontman of the Christian rock band Newsboys and former member of the Grammy-winning group DC Talk, is facing serious allegations of sexual misconduct and substance abuse.
According to an investigation published by The Roys Report and reported by The Christian Post, multiple men have accused Tait of predatory behavior spanning over a decade.
The allegations, detailed in a two-and-a-half-year investigation by The Roys Report, involve at least three men who claim Tait engaged in inappropriate conduct during incidents in 2004, 2010, and 2014.
The accusers, who were in their early 20s at the time, described patterns of grooming, excessive alcohol use, and non-consensual physical contact. Specific allegations include Tait allegedly fondling two of the men while they were intoxicated and offering cocaine to another on the Newsboys’ tour bus.
One accuser, identified as “Steven,” recounted waking up to Tait touching him inappropriately after a night of heavy drinking, an incident he later discussed with his then-girlfriend.
Tait, 58, has not publicly responded to these allegations and has been absent from social media since announcing his departure from Newsboys in January 2025.
The timing of his exit, which he attributed to “prayer and fasting,” has sparked speculation within the Christian music community, especially as it followed shortly after rumors about his personal conduct surfaced online.
The Christian Post noted that Newsboys issued a statement expressing devastation over the allegations, with band members Jeff Frankenstein, Jody Davis, Duncan Phillips, and Adam Agee stating, “Last night our hearts were shattered when we read the news alleging drug abuse and inappropriate sexual actions by our former lead singer, Michael Tait.”
The band revealed that Tait had confessed to them in January about living a “double-life,” though they claimed they were unaware of the extent of the alleged misconduct.
The Christian Post further reported that the Newsboys urged any victims to come forward, emphasizing that they do not condone sexual assault.
The band’s statement highlighted their shock and heartbreak, noting that Tait’s actions, if true, betrayed both the band and their families.
The allegations have sent shockwaves through the contemporary Christian music (CCM) industry, where Tait has been a prominent figure since the 1990s, first with DC Talk’s iconic album Jesus Freak and later with Newsboys’ hits like God’s Not Dead.
The accusers, who have chosen anonymity, told The Roys Report they are speaking out to protect others from similar experiences.
One victim, referred to as “Phillip,” described an incident in 2004 where Tait allegedly touched him inappropriately during a visit to Tait’s home in Nashville.
Another accuser, “Taylor,” a former Newsboys crew member, alleged a 2014 incident on the band’s tour bus involving non-consensual touching after declining Tait’s offer of cocaine.
These accounts were corroborated by multiple sources, including text messages and bandmates who witnessed unusual behavior but did not initially recognize it as assault.
