An Air India passenger plane, flight AI 171, tragically crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad, India, on Thursday.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was bound for Gatwick Airport in London and had more than 200 people onboard, including 242 passengers and crew members.
According to Fox News, the incident occurred five minutes post-takeoff at approximately 1:38 p.m. local time, with reports indicating there are likely no survivors.
According to Ahmadabad’s city police commissioner, G.S. Malik, the crash site is located in a residential area known as Meghani Nagar, which raises concerns about possible additional casualties among local residents.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing smoke rising from the crash site, and it was noted that the aircraft had issued a “mayday” call to air traffic control just before the incident.
Air India Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran expressed profound sorrow in a statement, confirming the accident and extending condolences to the families of those affected.
He emphasized that the airline’s primary focus is on supporting the victims and their families, as well as assisting emergency response teams.
The passenger demographics aboard the flight included 169 individuals from India, 53 from Britain, 7 from Portugal, and 1 from Canada. The injured passengers are being transported to local hospitals for treatment.
In terms of the crash’s impact on infrastructure, authorities noted that the plane collided with a building identified as a doctors’ hostel.
A senior police officer reported that approximately 70% to 80% of the area has been cleared and efforts to clear any remaining debris are ongoing. Over 100 bodies have been taken to a hospital for autopsies, according to police reports.
