(OPINION) Megachurch Baptist preacher, Dr. Delman Coates, referenced “problematic translations” of the Bible as he argued against the teaching that sex before or outside of marriage is a sin.

In a sermon series that aimed to “clarify what has been distorted and misunderstood by the church for millennia,” Coates fully supported consensual premarital sex.

The preacher, whose remarks were reported by ChurchLeaders.com on November 6, 2024, argues that traditional teachings on sexual purity before marriage lack direct scriptural support, challenging long-held beliefs in many evangelical circles.

The preacher asserts that the Bible does not explicitly prohibit premarital sex, suggesting that cultural and historical contexts have shaped the church’s stance rather than clear biblical mandates.

He points to the absence of specific verses condemning consensual premarital relationships between adults, contrasting this with explicit biblical prohibitions on adultery, fornication (often interpreted broadly), and other sexual sins.

According to the preacher, modern interpretations of “sexual immorality” may not align with the original intent of the scriptures, which were written in a vastly different social and cultural era.

He further argues that the emphasis on abstinence before marriage stems from tradition and societal norms rather than divine instruction.

In his view, healthy, committed relationships—whether marital or not—can align with Christian values if they reflect mutual respect and love.

The preacher’s claims have ignited pushback from traditionalists who argue that the Bible implicitly supports abstinence through its teachings on marriage and sexual purity. Key scriptures often cited include:

• 1 Corinthians 6:18-20, which urges believers to “flee from sexual immorality” and honor God with their bodies.

• Hebrews 13:4, which states, “Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.”

• 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5, which calls for sanctification and abstaining from sexual immorality, encouraging believers to control their bodies “in a way that is holy and honorable.”

Critics of the preacher’s stance contend that the biblical definition of sexual immorality (often translated from the Greek word porneia) encompasses premarital sex.

They argue that the Bible’s consistent portrayal of sex as a sacred act within the covenant of marriage leaves little room for alternative interpretations.

Additionally, traditionalists emphasize that the cultural context of biblical times assumed sexual activity was reserved for marriage, making explicit prohibitions unnecessary.

The preacher’s remarks have elicited a range of responses. Some progressive Christians have welcomed the discussion, viewing it as an opportunity to reexamine outdated traditions in light of modern relationships and societal changes.

They argue that focusing on love, consent, and mutual respect aligns more closely with Jesus’ teachings on compassion and grace.
