Pakistan could reach 120 degrees this week setting a global record

Apr 29, 2025

As global temperatures continue to rise, Pakistan is now facing an alarming heatwave that could push thermometers to a staggering 120 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 49°C) this week—potentially placing it among the hottest regions on Earth and possibly setting a new global temperature record for April.

According to forecasts cited in an MSN Weather report, the sweltering heat is expected to engulf parts of southern and central Pakistan, compounding concerns over public health, water scarcity, energy shortages, and crop damage.

The cities of Jacobabad and Nawabshah—already known as some of the hottest places on the planet—are expected to be among the worst hit.

If Pakistan’s temperatures exceed the 120°F mark this week, the country could claim one of the highest April temperatures ever recorded globally.

This follows a trend of unprecedented heat around the world, as scientists and meteorologists continue to warn of intensifying climate extremes due to global warming.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has flagged South Asia, and Pakistan in particular, as being highly vulnerable to climate-related disasters.

With poor infrastructure in many regions and limited access to cooling technologies, large segments of the population are at high risk of heat-related illness, including heatstroke and dehydration.

The intense heat is straining an already fragile power grid in Pakistan, triggering rolling blackouts in some areas as demand for electricity surges.

Water shortages have also become more pronounced, especially in the agricultural heartlands where irrigation is essential for sustaining crops during the blistering pre-monsoon months.

Beyond health and infrastructure, the heatwave is posing serious threats to food security. Prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures can destroy staple crops like wheat, cotton, and mangoes—key exports for Pakistan’s economy and essentials for domestic consumption.

This extreme weather event is part of a broader global trend of rising temperatures, driven by the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Pakistan, despite contributing less than 1% of global carbon emissions, ranks among the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world. Events like this are becoming more frequent and more intense, pushing communities to the brink.

Climate experts are calling on the international community to offer stronger support for adaptation and mitigation efforts in the region. Locally, authorities are urging residents to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and minimize strenuous activity.
