Toledo Fire and Rescue officials described a “freak accident” when a tree and power lines fell on the pastor’s vehicle resulting in a fractured skull and brain bleeding.

His wife, Jennifer Garrison, suffered minor injuries. The couple was rushed to a local hospital, where Matthew remains in critical condition but is showing signs of recovery.

“He’s a fighter, and we’re praying for a miracle,” Jennifer said in a statement shared on social media.

The man killed in the crash was 34-year-old Joshua Parcell, a passenger in the vehicle from which the tire originated.

Authorities report that Parcell was ejected from the vehicle during the collision and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of that vehicle was unharmed but is cooperating with investigators.

According to the Stark County Sheriff’s Office, the tire came loose from a pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction on State Route 172.

The detached tire crossed the median and struck Garrison’s car, causing catastrophic damage. Investigators are examining the cause of the tire detachment, with preliminary findings suggesting possible mechanical failure or improper maintenance.

The Shiloh Christian Union Church community has rallied around the Garrison family, organizing prayer vigils and a fundraiser to cover medical expenses.

“Pastor Matt has been a pillar of our community, always there for anyone in need. Now it’s our turn to support him,” said church member Emily Sanders.

The accident has sparked local discussions about vehicle safety and the importance of regular maintenance checks. Ohio State Highway Patrol is urging drivers to inspect their vehicles, particularly tires and wheel assemblies, to prevent similar tragedies.

Parcell’s family has also expressed their grief, describing him as a loving father and friend. A memorial service is being planned in his honor.

The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities appealing for witnesses to come forward with any additional information.
