Greenland’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, delivered a fiery rebuke to U.S. President Donald Trump, firmly asserting the island’s sovereignty in response to Trump’s renewed claims over the territory.

Nielsen’s statement, “We don’t belong to anyone else,” has reverberated across international headlines, spotlighting the ongoing tension between Greenland and the United States over the latter’s interest in the world’s largest island.

According to the Express.co.uk, Nielsen, who assumed office last week as the leader of the Demokraatit party—Greenland’s largest parliamentary faction—wasted no time addressing Trump’s remarks.

“We must listen when others talk about us. But we must not be shaken,” Nielsen declared, directly countering Trump’s assertion that the U.S. is “getting Greenland” for national security purposes.

The prime minister emphasized Greenland’s autonomy, stating, “The U.S. is not getting that. We don’t belong to anyone else. And it is through these values that we must clearly, clearly and calmly show the American president that Greenland is ours.”

This latest clash follows a pattern of Trump’s fascination with acquiring Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.

The Guardian reported Nielsen doubling down on this stance, saying, “We determine our own future,” in a clear rejection of what he described as Trump’s “latest threat.”

Posts on X echoed this sentiment, with users citing Nielsen’s words as a bold stand against American overreach.

The Guardian further noted that Nielsen’s comments came shortly after Vice President JD Vance visited a U.S. military base in northern Greenland, a move that may have heightened local sensitivities.

Trump’s interest in Greenland is not new. In December 2024, Greenland’s then-Prime Minister Mute Egede similarly rebuffed Trump’s suggestion of purchasing the island, declaring, “Greenland is ours.

We are not for sale and will never be for sale,” as reported by RT.com. Nielsen’s recent statements build on this defiance, reflecting a consistent Greenlandic resolve to maintain its independence amid U.S. ambitions.

ABC News highlighted a previous warning from Greenlandic leadership in early March 2025, when the prime minister at the time wrote on social media, “Greenland is ours,” signaling a unified front against Trump’s controversial rhetoric.

The Trump administration has justified its interest in Greenland by citing national security concerns, particularly given the island’s strategic Arctic location and its proximity to Russia.

However, Nielsen’s response, as covered by multiple outlets, underscores a broader narrative of self-determination. “It was like that yesterday. That’s how it is today.

And that’s how it will be in the future,” Nielsen told Express.co.uk, reinforcing Greenland’s historical and ongoing resistance to external claims.

Social media reactions on X have amplified the story, with users praising Nielsen’s forthrightness. One post described his statement as a rejection of “Trump’s latest threat,” while another emphasized Greenland’s identity:

“We are not Americans, we are not Danes, because we are Greenlanders.” These sentiments align with Nielsen’s public messaging, which he has also shared via social media to rally domestic support and counter Trump’s narrative.
