Trump is expected to take control of USPS, and fire postal board

President Donald Trump is reportedly preparing to overhaul the United States Postal Service (USPS) by dismissing its current leadership and integrating the independent agency into the Commerce Department.

According to six individuals familiar with the situation, this initiative is expected to be executed through an executive order as early as this week.

The executive order aims to dissolve the existing Postal Service Board of Governors and transfer control of USPS operations directly to the Commerce Department.

This restructuring aligns with the administration’s broader objective of privatizing the Postal Service, a topic President Trump has previously discussed.

This is especially true given the agency’s substantial financial losses, which amounted to $9.5 billion in the last fiscal year.

This development coincides with Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s recent intention to step down.

DeJoy, who has led the USPS since 2020, has requested the Postal Service Board of Governors to identify his successor.

His tenure has been marked by efforts to implement a 10-year plan to modernize operations and achieve financial stability amidst significant challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and increased mail-in ballots during elections.

The proposed integration of the USPS into the Commerce Department has sparked considerable debate.

Critics argue that such a move could undermine the agency’s independence and potentially lead to service reductions, particularly in rural areas.

Mark Dimondstein, President of the American Postal Workers Union, stated, “The Washington Post has reported that the Trump Administration will soon issue an Executive Order firing the Postal Board of Governors, and placing the United States Postal Service under the control of the Commerce Department.”

Additionally, Representative Gerry Connolly, Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee, expressed concerns over the potential privatization of the Postal Service, stating, “Privatizing the Postal Service is an attack on Americans’ access to critical information, benefits, and life-saving medical care.”

The USPS has faced ongoing financial challenges, with a reported deficit of $9.5 billion in 2024.

Despite efforts to modernize and cut costs, including consolidating mail processing centers and raising rates, the agency continues to struggle financially.

As the situation develops, stakeholders and the public await further details on the executive order and its implications for the future of the United States Postal Service.
