A report from CNN reveals that numerous FBI agents involved in the investigation of the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack and the now-dismissed classified documents case against President Donald Trump may face job losses as early as Friday.

This development is aligned with reports of a “purge” targeting leaders of FBI field offices nationwide.

According to the CNN report, some agents have received emails indicating they may be dismissed due to their participation in actions perceived as unfavorable by Trump.

Interim leaders at the Justice Department have reportedly been compiling lists of individuals in the FBI whose work has drawn criticism from the former president.

FBI leadership has warned agents and analysts that they might be asked to resign or could face termination.

This has raised concerns among those who conducted investigations into Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents as well as those who investigated the approximately 1,600 individuals charged or convicted in relation to the Capitol attack, as they fear potential retribution for fulfilling their assigned duties.

“For each employee included in the lists, provide the current title, office to which the person is assigned, role in the investigation or prosecution, and date of last activity relating to the investigation or prosecution,” Bove wrote.

“Upon timely receipt of the requested information, the Office of the Deputy Attorney General will commence a review process to determine whether any additional personnel actions are necessary.”

The Bove memorandum also referenced the dismissal of senior officials within the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), an issue that had previously been reported by CNN.

Bove stated, “The FBI — including the Bureau’s prior leadership — actively participated in what President Trump has appropriately described as ‘a grave national injustice that has been perpetrated on the American people over the last four years’ concerning the events that transpired at or near the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.”

Furthermore, the Department of Justice has requested information regarding FBI personnel involved in a criminal case initiated in September by the prior administration against several high-ranking members of Hamas in connection with the attack on October 7, 2023.

Driscoll emphasized in his email that “we are going to adhere to the law, comply with FBI policy, and prioritize what is in the best interest of the workforce and the American populace.”

The notices of impending termination issued on Friday sent waves of concern throughout the FBI, as line-level agents and analysts conveyed to CNN.
