Firefighters in Western North Carolina are currently addressing multiple wildfires in McDowell County, an area still experiencing the repercussions of the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene.

The most significant of these incidents, known as the Crooked Creek Fire, has affected at least 250 acres near Old Fort and was reported to be only 15% contained as of Wednesday evening, according to emergency management officials.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire was ignited when a tree fell onto a power line, leading to the rapid spread of flames due to prevailing dry conditions and elevated winds.

In recent weeks, the region has experienced below-average rainfall, contributing to an environment conducive to wildfires.

Wind gusts of up to 50 mph recorded on Wednesday intensified the situation, although meteorological forecasts predict an improvement in conditions overnight.

Evacuations have been mandated in certain areas of Old Fort, with residents strongly advised to evacuate for their safety.

A temporary shelter has been established at a local Baptist church for those displaced by the incident. Emergency responders have confirmed the destruction of several outbuildings; however, there have been no reported injuries thus far.

The North Carolina Forest Service had previously issued a fire warning, citing a combination of strong winds, low humidity, and drought conditions as significant risk factors.

These concerns became evident as the flames advanced through regions that were already in the process of recovering from the storm damage sustained months prior.
