Trump to sign executive orders banning transgender service members

Jan 27, 2025

President Trump is anticipated to sign two executive orders on Monday that will impose restrictions on transgender service members in the military and eliminate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs.

This move follows his earlier action on his first day in office, when he revoked the Biden administration’s 2021 directive that permitted transgender individuals to serve openly in the military.

The forthcoming executive orders are expected to establish strict military standards regarding pronouns and gender identity and will explicitly prohibit numerous transgender service members from military service, citing concerns related to mental and physical readiness.

Following the signing of the order, the Department of Defense will be tasked with developing and implementing the new policy.

A White House document previewing the order mentions that “unit cohesion requires high levels of integrity and stability among service members,” highlighting the rationale behind the policy changes regarding transgender soldiers.

Completion of treatments following transition surgery can require a minimum duration of 12 months for individuals, during which time they often necessitate the administration of strong narcotics.

Throughout this recovery period, these individuals are typically unable to fulfill military readiness requirements and require continuous medical support.

Such circumstances hinder their ability to participate in deployment or meet other preparedness standards, as noted by one official referencing a fact sheet.

According to CNN, The specifics regarding the implementation of the ban fall under the purview of the Department of Defense (DoD), according to the statement made by the official.

Data from the Palm Center, an independent research institute that conducts thorough investigations on sexual minorities in the military, indicated that there were approximately 14,000 transgender service members within the United States military in 2018.

A memorandum from the Pentagon outlining the ban during President Trump’s initial term suggested that exceptions could be made for transgender service members already in uniform who had enlisted under previous policies prior to the enforcement of the ban.

Additionally, exceptions were recommended for individuals who do not seek a change in gender and for those who had maintained stability for 36 consecutive months in their biological sex before accession. It remains uncertain whether the new administration’s ban will also include similar exceptions.
