Trump fires back and orders tariffs, visa restrictions after Colombia rejects deportation flight

Jan 26, 2025

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday his decision to impose tariffs, visa restrictions, and other retaliatory measures against Colombia following the Colombian government’s rejection of two flights carrying migrants.

He indicated that these measures were necessary due to the actions taken by Colombian President Gustavo Petro, which he asserted “jeopardized” national security in the United States.

In a statement posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump remarked, “These measures are just the beginning.”

He expressed that the U.S. would not tolerate violations of legal obligations by the Colombian government regarding the acceptance and return of individuals deemed as criminals who have been deported to the United States.

Earlier on the same day, President Petro declared that his administration would not accept flights transporting migrants deported from the United States until a protocol is established that ensures their treatment with “dignity.”

Petro’s announcement was made via two posts on the social media platform X, one of which featured a news footage of migrants reportedly deported to Brazil, walking on the tarmac while restrained. More in the video below:
