United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer communicated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, asserting that any peace initiative in the Middle East should facilitate the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state, as conveyed by Downing Street.
The leaders engaged in a discussion focusing on the delicate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, according to a spokesperson for the UK government.
During this dialogue, both parties concurred on the necessity of striving towards a permanent and peaceful resolution that ensures the security and stability of Israel.
The British government’s summary of the call indicated that the Prime Minister expressed the UK’s readiness to support a political process aimed at establishing a viable and sovereign Palestinian state.
Furthermore, Starmer emphasized the importance of facilitating uninterrupted humanitarian aid to Gaza to assist those Palestinians in urgent need.
He also extended personal gratitude to the Israeli government for its efforts in securing the release of hostages, including British citizen Emily Damari.
According to the statement, Starmer remarked, “Witnessing Emily’s return to her family was not only a joyous occasion but also a poignant reminder of the human toll exacted by the conflict.”
“The prime minister added that the UK stands ready to do everything it can to support a political process, which should also lead to a viable and sovereign Palestinian state.”
Starmer also “reiterated that it was vital to ensure humanitarian aid can now flow uninterrupted into Gaza, to support the Palestinians who desperately need it,” the statement added.
Starmer “offered his personal thanks for the work done by the Israeli government to secure the release of the hostages, including British hostage Emily Damari,” the statement added.
