Officials have announced the detection of avian influenza in a commercial poultry flock in Georgia for the first time since the onset of the current outbreak in 2022.

The positive case of the H5N1 strain of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza was identified in Elbert County and confirmed by both the Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

This incident represents the fifth detection of the virus in the state; however, it marks the inaugural case within a commercial poultry operation. Recently, GDA officials reported the presence of the virus in a flock of 13 chickens and ducks located in Clayton County.

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper stated, “This is a serious threat to Georgia’s primary industry and the livelihoods of thousands of Georgians who depend on our state’s poultry sector.”

He further emphasized that efforts are being made continuously to mitigate the potential spread of the disease and to enable the prompt resumption of normal poultry activities within the state.

Consequently, all in-state poultry exhibitions, shows, swaps, meets, and sales have been suspended until further notice.

Agriculture officials are currently assessing the situation regarding the potential spread of the virus to other avian flocks. In an effort to contain the outbreak, they have established a stringent quarantine zone spanning a radius of 6.2 miles.

This area will be under close surveillance, with rigorous testing protocols set to be implemented over the next two weeks to monitor for any signs of infection.

As for the prohibition on poultry-related activities — including exhibitions, shows, swaps, and sales at flea markets or auction venues — officials have stated that it is unclear when these restrictions will be lifted.

The timeline for lifting these bans will be contingent on the results of ongoing testing, and notifications will be communicated as circumstances evolve.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), commonly referred to as bird flu, represents a grave and highly contagious viral disease that poses a serious threat to bird populations across the globe.

This disease is instigated by influenza A viruses, which wreak havoc among both domestic poultry and wild avian species, raising alarm not only for the poultry industry but also in relation to public health concerns.

HPAI is notorious for its rapid transmission and alarmingly high mortality rates among infected birds, resulting in devastating economic repercussions for the poultry sector.

While the virus predominantly targets domestic poultry species — including chickens, turkeys, and ducks — it can also infect wild birds, which often serve as asymptomatic carriers, posing additional challenges in controlling the spread of this dangerous virus.
