PROPHECY WATCH: 50% of people ‘recently visited places which did not accept or discouraged cash’

A recent survey has found that half (50%) of respondents have visited places that either did not accept cash or discouraged its use. This survey is part of research conducted by Link, the ATM and cash access network, aimed at understanding how and where people use cash.

When participants were asked which locations did not accept cash or discouraged its use, parking facilities emerged as the most common response, according to a YouGov survey of over 2,100 people across the UK conducted in November. Cafes and restaurants followed closely, while public transport and pubs shared the third spot.

Conversely, convenience stores were identified as the most popular locations for cash usage, followed by supermarkets and giving money to friends and family. Almost three-quarters (73%) of respondents reported using cash in the past two weeks.

Graham Mott, director of strategy at Link, stated, “While more people are choosing to use digital payments, cash remains resilient. People enjoy using cash and appreciate having the option to use it when they prefer.”
