(OPINION) The Darkness aims to overshadow Christmas this year with Jack Black’s new movie, “Dear Santa,” which takes on a darker twist by focusing on Satan. As reported by ChurchLeaders, the film is set to premiere on Paramount+ on November 25, just in time for the Thanksgiving weekend.

The storyline revolves around a young boy named Liam, who accidentally addresses his Christmas letter to Satan instead of Santa. Consequently, Satan, portrayed by Jack Black, appears to grant the boy three wishes, promising that after fulfilling them, he will take Liam’s soul.

Created by the team behind “Dumb and Dumber,” the film seeks to present Satan in a light-hearted way, suggesting that being “bad” is merely part of fun. It playfully alludes to the notion of Satan claiming the boy’s soul and his ability to manipulate people’s lives.

This portrayal, however, undermines the very real dangers associated with this enemy who seeks to “steal, kill, and destroy.” By making the concept of losing one’s soul seem like just a joke, the film diminishes the gravity of eternity.

Eternity separated from God is far more serious than we can fully comprehend. It implies living without all of God’s qualities: light, life, love, goodness, and more.

Instead, it means being bound by restlessness, loneliness, fear, and unending agony. Yet, Hollywood reduces this profound reality to mere entertainment.
