(OPINION) Leftist MSNBC commentator Joy Reid offered some “free advice” to “white women” following President-elect Donald Trump’s victory last week, stating, “Black women have resigned from the ‘Save America’ coalition.”
After exit polls revealed that the majority of white female voters supported Trump, Reid contrasted their choices with those of black voters.
“I just want to give some free advice to white progressive women who may be considering marching against Trump’s victory, perhaps putting on those P-word hats again,” Reid said in a TikTok video on Saturday. “I would advise you not to send any of those invites to black women. I’m just going to tell you right now, they’re not coming.”
Reid, who is of Congolese and Guyanese descent, added, “I’m pretty sure black women have resigned from the ‘Save America’ coalition, the ‘Save Democracy’ coalition, and definitely the ‘Save the Democratic Party’ coalition.”
She continued, “I would suggest keeping those invites among your own friends because I think black women are now focused on ‘saving black women, prioritizing black men, and prioritizing black communities, black businesses, and black spaces.’ But saving America or the Democratic Party? Yeah, I don’t think that’s happening.”
During MSNBC’s election night coverage, Reid remarked that “white women voters did not” support Vice President Kamala Harris as strongly as black voters did.
“It’s a state where women lost their reproductive rights, amidst a strong push to encourage women to prevent putting back into the White House the person responsible for taking those rights away,” she argued. “But that message clearly wasn’t enough to persuade enough white women to vote for Vice President Harris, a fellow woman.”
Reid pointed out that this was the second opportunity for white women in the U.S. to change their engagement with the patriarchy, referencing the 2016 loss of former Secretary Hillary Clinton.
“If people aren’t receptive to it, and if they vote more in favor of party lines or prioritize race over gender in protecting their interests, there’s really not much more that can be done.”
