Sikh Republican Harmeet Dhillon delivered the closing prayer at the Republican National Convention. Despite facing criticism on social media for offering a non-Christian prayer, Dhillon felt very welcome at the event.
She comes from a family of Sikh immigrants and is a religious-liberty lawyer and a legal adviser for the 2020 Trump campaign. She spoke to the Milwaukee audience, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to share a prayer from her faith tradition, Sikhism, which has over 25 million practitioners worldwide.
She sang the Ardas in Punjabi, and translated the prayer in English to, “This body and soul are yours. You are our mother and father; and we are your children. In your grace and through your benevolence, we experience peace and happiness!”
Dhillon also thanked God, whom she addressed as “Waheguru,” for the religious liberty enjoyed in America and for protecting Donald Trump from an attempted assassination.
She reported feeling very welcome among the Republican audience, noting that the room was silent and people bowed their heads respectfully during her prayer.
