(OPINION) Bill Maher has ridiculed claims that God saved Donald Trump’s life during an assassination attempt at a political rally.
The comedian blasted those using the events of last week as evidence that the presidential hopeful is being endorsed by a higher power.
He accused Republicans of engaging in a ‘orgy of magical thinking’ by suggesting that Trump’s survival was divine intervention.
Instead he stated that the narrow escape was down to nothing but luck, as he cautioned against sanctifying Trump into a religious figure.
‘Donald Trump, even if you like him, is powerful enough as a past president, a likely future president and to be perfectly frank a cult leader – America doesn’t need a demigod,’ Maher said during his HBO show.
‘From the pharaohs, to Julius Caesar to Hirohito, many cultures have tried it the earthly being who is simultaneously divine or at least god-ish and it never turns out well.
‘It’s the 21st century, enough is enough with the interpreting every random sign as a DM from heaven.’
His comments came after various conservatives began sharing images of Trump as an angel or being saved by the hand of God.
This included Republican Congressman Mike Collins who said: ‘God spared Ronald Regan for a reason. God spared Donald Trump for a reason. God doesn’t miss.’
Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon said that Trump, ‘wears the armor of God’.
While pro-MAGA boxing star Jake Paul tweeted: ‘When you try and kill God’s angels and saviors it just makes them bigger.’
But Maher called out the hypocritical thinking of claiming that God saved Trump but allowed others such as Martin Luther King, JFK and John Lennon to die.
‘Look the a**hole who shot at Trump was cowardly, unpatriotic, selfish, vile and weak and he should rot in hell – but thinking that God protects your heroes and not mine that isn’t cool either,’ Maher added.
‘Trump didn’t survive the attempt on his life because of divine intervention, he survived because a virgin couldn’t hit the fattest president since Taft,’ Maher said of shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks.
‘Make no mistake I’m glad he didn’t. But Trump is alive because he is the single luckiest motherf***ker that ever lived.’
Trump was speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania when Crooks, 20, opened fire on Saturday.
