Darwin has been rocked by a magnitude 7.3 earthquake that struck Indonesia overnight. The quake hit north of Timor Leste in the southeastern Asian country’s Barat Daya Islands at about 5.25 am AEDT on Thursday morning.
According to The Daily Mail, There is no threat of a tsunami to the Australian mainland or islands, the Bureau of Meteorology said. Geoscience said more than 1,700 Northern Territory residents reported feeling the shudder from the earthquake early on Thursday.
‘Can confirm shaking for around one minute here in Darwin from the earthquake north of Australia,’ one tweeted. Australian Olympic hockey champ Nova Peris said she felt the ground shake.
According to Express, A tsunami warning has not been issued for the surrounding islands following the earthquake. The impact of the earthquake was felt as far as 600km away in Darwin, the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory.
Around 1,700 of its residents have reported feeling tremors early on Thursday, according to Geoscience. The Volcano Discovery website said based on preliminary seismic data, the earthquake was likely felt by “many” people in the area of the epicenter.
