(ETH) – A new report is revealing that 1 in 5 people in the United States have had a sexually transmitted disease and half of them are under the age of 24.
The report from FOX5 shows statistics from 2018 that were released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with the analysis being published in the journal Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STI).
The new data reveals there were nearly 68 million STIs on any given day and 26 million newly acquired STIs in 2018 with half of the cases of STIs being acquired by those aged 15 to 24 years old.
What’s even more stunning is the fact that sexually transmitted diseases reportedly put a price tag on the healthcare system of billions of dollars annually and those acquired in 2018 alone will add $16 billion in direct lifetime medical costs.
