(ETH) – Two earthquakes have rattled Western North Carolina in the past 24 hours, according to the Charlotte Observer. Three quakes have rattled the same region in the past week. The recent earthquake struck about a mile from Valley Hill at approximately 10:11 p.m. on Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Valley Hill is located roughly 2 miles southwest of Hendersonville and 25 miles south of Asheville. As of Tuesday afternoon, There have been no official reports if anyone feeling the 2.1-magnitude tremor, which was reportedly more than 6 miles deep. Monday’s earthquake was the most recent to strike the area.
The first quake was a 2.3-magnitude tremor that shook the ground more than one mile southwest of Valley Hill, according to geologists. The 5-mile deep quake struck at 9 p.m. on Sunday, according to officials. Residents in the region reported that they felt the quake, and some even reported experiencing “weak” shaking but no damage, .
The second quake struck the same part of Western North Carolina, according to the News & Observer. It came hours after another tremor was recorded over the Tennessee border. The small area outside of Hendersonville has now recorded three earthquakes in under a week.
I live an hour outside of Charlotte and over the last week or so I have noticed a lot of sustained noises at odd times, even late at night, that almost sound like a cigarette boat engine. Yet with no confirmed actual source. Also a lot of distant booms – seemingly not weather related. Very interesting.
