(ETH) – Some residents in Southern California thought the “Apocalypse” was upon us, after more than 60 witnesses reported seeing ‘a meteor’ flash through the sky on Wednesday night in a fireball so bright it was reportedly described as ‘the end of the world’. According to a report from the American Meteor Society, the bright flash of light in the sky was more likely caused by the burn-up of space debris than by a meteor. As of now, the object has not yet been officially identified.
The strange event was reported by residents around Los Angeles and San Diego. The event was reportedly witnessed as far north as Santa Barbara and reported along the coast to San Diego but the majority of the reports came from the Los Angeles/San Diego area. Many of the witnesses took to social media to share their experiences. The testimonies of some of the eyewitnesses said:
‘Saw the craziest meteor I’ve ever seen!! It blew into pieces and burned up in the atmosphere!!,’ one woman wrote on Twitter. ‘Oh, My Lanta that was SO COOL!!!!! And I caught the end on camera!!’ ‘Y’ALL I was really thinking it was the end of the world…. This thing was huge,’ another wrote.
