(Express) – A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 has struck the north coast of Japan. The earthquake which was located 114 miles southeast of the city of Nemuro struck at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) put the original magnitude down to 6.2 from the initial estimate from the country’s Earthquake Early Warning System. Serious damage and casualties are

unlikely but in some areas, tremors and moderate shaking may have been felt. No tsunami warnings have been issued. The US Geological Survey (USGS) puts the magnitude at 6.0. A spokesman for USGS said: “There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.” Japan sits on the deadly Pacific Ring of Fire which is known for its earthquakes and volcanoes. READ MORE
