Thousands without power as extreme heat, powerful storms hit Southern CaliforniaMore than 15,000 electricity customers in Southern California were without power Wednesday evening as searing temperatures and intense storms hit the region. In Los Angeles, about 5,000 customers have lost power, said Kim Hughes, a spokeswoman for the Department of Water and Power.

She said it probably would take about 10 hours from the time of the outage before power would be restored. The majority of the outages were concentrated in two neighborhoods: Pacific Palisades and Exposition Park, near the campus of USC. It’s unclear what triggered the outages, but Hughes said many outages might be due to overuse during the heat wave rolling through L.A. “When it’s so hot, people don’t turn off anything. We want to remind people to give their equipment a break for an hour or two,” she said. FULL REPORT
