Magnitude 4.6 Earthquake shakes Big Island

A magnitude-4.6 earthquake rattled the Big Island this morning. The quake was reported at 6:43 a.m. about nine miles southeast of Waikoloa, 24 miles northeast of Kailua-Kona, and 39 miles west-northwest of Hilo. It had a depth of 18.6 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It was originally reported as magnitude-4.4, but later upgraded to 4.6. There is no threat of a tsunami. Residents on Oahu from Waimanalo to Makakilo reported feeling the earthquake this morning. The USGS web site’s “Did you feel it?” page received hundreds of responses mostly from the Big Island but many from other islands, including one from Waianae, 195 miles from the epicenter. READ MORE
