Layoffs strike freight-related companies across Southeast with more than 1,800 jobs cut

Since the onset of April, there has been a notable increase in layoffs within the manufacturing, distribution, and freight sectors across the southeastern United States.

According to various media reports and Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notices, over 1,300 job reductions have been announced.

C&S Wholesale Services LLC has announced the cessation of operations at its distribution center located in Baldwin, Florida, resulting in the layoff of 490 employees.

The facility is scheduled to close by July Fourth; however, the company did not disclose the reasons for this closure or the associated layoffs.

Baldwin is approximately 21 miles from Jacksonville, and C&S Wholesale Services, operating under the name C&S Wholesale Grocers, is recognized as one of the largest wholesale grocery supply entities in the United States.

Additionally, Tier 1 automotive supplier Adient Plc has declared the closure of two factories in Tennessee, which will lead to layoffs affecting 415 workers.

Specifically, a plant in Lexington will be closed, impacting 320 employees, while a factory in Columbia will affect 95 workers. The company provided a rationale for the facility closures in a WARN notice submitted to the state.

Both facilities are set to close by June 27. Adient specializes in the production of automotive seating and components for major automotive manufacturers, including General Motors, Ford, and Honda.

Headquartered in Plymouth, Michigan, Adient employs approximately 70,000 individuals across 29 countries and operates more than 200 sites globally.

According to a WARN notice, Saks Global has announced the shutdown of a fulfillment center in La Vergne, Tennessee, which will eliminate 446 jobs. La Vergne is located approximately 19 miles southeast of Nashville.

This facility is part of Saks Global, a New York-based holding company that includes prominent department stores such as Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Saks Global did not provide a rationale for the fulfillment center closure in its WARN notice.

Furthermore, as reported by WWD, the company has recently revealed plans to lay off approximately 550 workers nationwide in an effort to consolidate operations.

According to a WARN notice and media reports, Grede LLC has announced the closure of its iron foundry in Brewton, Alabama, resulting in the layoffs of 220 employees. READ MORE
