(OPINION) ETH – A new report is revealing this morning that the Biden administration has officially given the green light for manufacturers of abortion pills to distribute them by mail citing safety during the COVID pandemic, ending the previous regulations that once stopped their distribution.

This move reportedly reverses a policy that had been put in place by the Trump administration and was backed by the U.S. Supreme Court in January. According to CBN, The court upheld the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) rule requiring in-person patient visits to perform abortions, even during the pandemic.

The recent report has pro-life advocates concerned about the safety of at-home abortions as the method will become increasingly prevalent. As a result, they’re pushing legislation in several Republican-led states to restrict it and, in some cases, even ban providers from prescribing these abortion drugs like RU-486 via telemedicine.

Despite concerns of pro-lifers and other opponents of the measure, Politico.com stated that acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock recently informed the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists via a letter on Monday that her agency concluded that permitting patients to receive abortion pills via telemedicine and through the mail will not increase risks and will keep them safe from contracting the virus.

Roughly 40% of all abortions in the US are now done through drugs rather than surgery, and the COVID-19 pandemic has caused an even higher spike in this percentage. One research associate for the DeVos Center at The Heritage Foundation recently wrote a review of chemical abortions.

In the review Melanie Israel came to the conclusion that this drug was dangerous and here was her takeaway:  “Chemical abortion poses serious health risks to women and has a complication rate four times higher than that of surgical abortion.

The farther along a woman is in her pregnancy, the more likely she is to experience complications. The abortion lobby downplays the risks of chemical abortion. But the facts are clear; in the United States, 24 women have died following a chemical abortion. The FDA has documented thousands of cases of adverse events—including serious complications such as hemorrhage, ruptured ectopic pregnancies, and sepsis”.
