(ETH) – In what is yet another creepy advancement in technology and AI, There are reports of a highly sophisticated technology service that has been hailed by top scientists as being conscious.
According to the report from Daily Star, GPT-3 is a language-generation artificial intelligence (AI) model that generates text with minimal human input at a rapid rate and is been hailed by experts around the world. The AI is capable of recognizing and replicating patterns of words before predicting what will come next thanks to its incredible power, containing 175 billion language parameters.
This has prompted Professor David Chalmers, of New York University who is an expert on mind philosophy, to suggest that GPT-3 was showing signs of consciousness. The professor stated: “I am open to the idea that a worm with 302 neurons is conscious, so I am open to the idea that GPT-3 with 175 billion parameters is conscious too.”
This machine is capable of processing an astonishing 45 billion times the number of words a human will perceive in their lifetime. Chief executive of OpenAI, Sam Altman, stated: “There is evidence here of the first precursor to general-purpose artificial intelligence, one system that can support many, many different applications and really elevate the kinds of software that we can build.
“I think its significance is a glimpse of the future.” He went further: “It is the most important thing that I can ever imagine working on. “I won’t pretend to have all the answers yet, but I am happy to spend my energy trying to contribute in whatever way I can.” AI is continuing to evolve rapidly around the world, which is drawing both excitement and warnings from experts.
