(ETH) – A scientist named James Lovelock is warning that Artificial intelligence (AI) will one day rapidly evolve beyond our understanding and control, says James Lovelock. The scientist predicts that Artificial intelligence (AI) will one day keep human beings around in the same way that we keep plants in our garden.

The veteran environmentalist whois best-known to the wider public for his influential Gaia theory, claims that while Artificial Intelligence will inevitably become the dominant form of life on Earth, AIs will one day desire to keep humanity around “like we keep plants in gardens.”

In Lovelock’s latest book Novacene, he predicts that the AI machines of the future “will have designed and built themselves from the artificial intelligence systems we have already constructed”. He goes on to warn that these self-replicating artificial intelligence will quickly evolve until they become “thousands, then millions of times more intelligent than us,” Lovelock also assures us that there is nothing to be afraid of, pointing out that computers – like humans – are threatened by climate change –

so keeping the planet habitable will be as important to them as it is to us: “by remarkable chance, it happens that the upper temperature for both organic and electronic life on the ocean planet Earth are almost identical and close to 50ºC”. The scientist is also dismissive of those like Elon Musk, who believes that AI represents a threat to humanity, and propose we enhance ourselves with bionic implants to even up the playing field.

Instead, he claims that he is optimistic about the future of AI, because “the optimistic version is more efficient.”
