UPDATE (ETH) – Hurricane Delta has rapidly strengthened into an “extremely dangerous” Category 4 storm and is heading on a path toward Louisiana, according to the latest from forecasters. Hurricane Delta’s intensification has also been deemed the most extreme in 15 years for an October hurricane. According to Accuweather, The storm’s maximum sustained winds increased by a whopping 70 mph — from 40 mph to 110 mph — in its first 24 hours as a named storm.

According to the report, As of 1 p.m. Tuesday, Delta was churning in the Caribbean Sea about 260 miles east- southeast of Cozumel, Mexico, and on its way towards the Yucatan Peninsula and the Gulf of Mexico. Even though the forecast trackers from the National Hurricane Center show that the path of Delta over the next five days has shifted slightly west, it is still projected to make landfall in southeast Louisiana on Friday night or Saturday morning as a Category 2 hurricane.

This will be the third major hurricane of the 2020 Atlantic season and the chances are increasing for a life-threatening storm surge and dangerous hurricane-force winds along the coasts of Louisiana and Mississippi beginning on Friday. Officials are warning that now is the time for residents and those in the path of this storm to begin making plans and prepare.
