(ETH) – Extreme weather continues to pummel the earth as parts of South America were just struck by record snow accumulations and below-freezing temperatures this week included Mendoza City in Argentina, where they recorded about 5 feet of snow which is the highest volume of snow recorded in the city this early in the season.

Meanwhile, The Andes mountain range in Chile and Argentina experienced large accumulations of snow in the past week. Local ski website, Lugares de Nieve, stated that on July 8th the Andes received “record accumulations of snow this year,” Exceptionally cold temperatures were also felt, with Rio Negro registering -23 °C (-9.4 °F).

Meanwhile, a deadly monsoon rainfall has reportedly triggered floods and multiple landslides in several districts of Bagmati Pradesh and Gandaki Pradesh, Nepal, from Wednesday to Friday, July 8 to 10, 2020 causing at least 12 fatalities– including three children, and 19 others that are missing.

According to the National Disaster, Risk Reduction, and Management Authority (NDRRMA), this season has been the deadliest monsoon in 11 years, with more than 60 fatalities since June 12th. The record-breaking rains have left several houses and roads damaged, forcing rescue teams to take alternate routes to reach incident sites and 14 houses that were swept away in the Barahbise Municipality alone, after floodwaters from Almo Thado Khola and Kabre Khola infiltrated the settlements.
