(ETH) – Facebook adds “conversion therapy” to its long list of content that it will remove from its platform. The official announcement came on Friday, as the social media giant announced it was banning content that promotes any content that is based on the unfounded notion that gays can change their sexual orientation through psychological or spiritual intervention.

Not only is Facebook banning this content but its image-centric social network Instagram is also updating policies to require removal of content that directly promotes conversion therapy when content is flagged by users, according to the California-based internet giant.

This latest move adds to an existing ban on ads that promote the tactic, which medical experts consider ineffective and often harmful. Yahoo News stated:  “We don’t allow attacks against people based on sexual orientation or gender identity and are updating our policies to ban the promotion of conversion therapy services,” a Facebook spokesperson said in response to an AFP inquiry.
