(ETH) – Scientists around the globe are sounding the alarm that humanity could be in grave danger if we continue to see insects dying off at the rate that we have seen. Many are even calling this an insect apocalypse — referring to a global dying-off of what may already amount to as much as 80 percent of the entire global bug population of the planet.

In a new report, 25 scientists from around the world have recently published a stark warning that if humankind doesn’t manage to save the global bug population, it could spell “doom” for human life as we know it! The warning came through open letters published in the journal called Nature Conversation.

“Each species represents an unrepeatable part of the history of life,” the scientists wrote. “In turn, each species also interacts with others and their environment in distinctive ways, weaving a complex network that sustains other species, including us.”

All life on earth including insects plays a vital role in the earth’s ecosystem. According to Futurism, provide humans with “[everything] from pollination and decomposition to being resources for new medicines”
