OPINION (Daily Star) –  A devastating solar storm will strike the Earth with solar flares that are 272 times hotter than the Sun, according to a terrifying warning. NASA’s space weather forecasters have predicted the next 10 years of solar activity as the Sun approaches its “weakest” period in 200 years. And the world is expected to be hit by flares which are a massive 1,500,000C, according to a space expert. Solar flares are bursts of intense radiation emanating from the Sun, NASA explains. They can last anywhere from minutes to hours and are often caused by sunspots –

cool, dark regions that form on the sun’s surface due to fluctuations in the Sun’s magnetic field. The space weather triggered by the activity on the Sun follows an 11-year-long cycle of solar minimums and solar maximums. During solar minimums, activity on the Sun’s scorching surface drops and sunspots and solar flares are less frequent. On the other hand, when the Sun reaches its point of maximum, hundreds of sunspots can erupt on the Sun and unleash jets of energy at the Earth. READ MORE
