(Express) – A number of strong earthquakes have struck off the coast of Indonesia today, signaling increased activity on the Ring of Fire. The monitoring agency said the 6.2 magnitude quake struck 83 miles northwest of the city of Kupang on Timor island at about 6.45am BST. It has been followed by a 5.3 magnitude quake off the coast of West Sumatra, which struck at 12.04pm BST. There were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage to property.

A spokesman for Indonesia’s Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Council said no tsunami warnings had been issued after the first quake. Already in the last 24 hours, a number of other earthquakes have struck the region. Shortly after 5 am BST a 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck near the island of Yamdena. It followed a 5.0 magnitude quake just off the coast of Sumba, last night at about 9.15pm (BST). Indonesia is located within the infamous Ring of Fire region. READ MORE
